Kara OTT release sparks fan backlash over fake negative reviews
After debuting on Netflix, fans of Dhanush’s crime thriller Kara regret skipping its theatrical run due to false negative reviews, issuing apologies to the makers.

The crime thriller Kara, starring Dhanush and directed by Vignesh Raja, has begun to stir fresh conversations after its release on Netflix. The film premiered in theatres on 30 April and became available on the streaming platform on 28 May, quickly becoming a topic of discussion on social media.
In theaters, the film received a mixed response, with several viewers noting that the screenplay felt slow and emotionally intense. However, the digital release has prompted many who skipped the movie in cinemas to share positive feedback online.
A viewer wrote, “How did we fail to celebrate this film? I skipped watching it after seeing the online reviews, but from start to finish, the movie was absolutely brilliant. One of the best films of the year.”
Another fan apologized to the makers, saying, “Sorry Mr D and Vignesh Raja, I skipped a super solid film because of fake negative reviews and now I feel guilty. Good films deserve strong word of mouth, and Kara deserved a better audience.”
The film’s interval block and the bank robbery scene that follows the break are receiving particular praise. A fan posted, “What an interval setup man!” while another review read, “The pre-interval bank robbery stretch is the scene to watch out for.”
Despite the surge in positive sentiment, some viewers remain unconvinced. One user noted, “Below average watch for me. Really tired of this slow‑paced thriller genre.” Another commented, “Though the screenplay feels sluggish at times, a few solid moments make it a decent watch overall. Can definitely give it a try on Netflix.”
Kara features an ensemble cast that includes Mamitha Baiju, K. S. Ravikumar, Karunas, Suraj Venjaramoodu, and Jayaram. G. V. Prakash Kumar composed the music.
The film was made on a reported budget with high expectations, and many hoped it would cross the ₹100 crore mark worldwide. However, Kara concluded its theatrical run with about ₹50 crore at the box office.
Following the OTT response, discussions about the film have resurfaced online. Meanwhile, Dhanush is currently working on his next project with director Rajkumar Periasamy, which is also expected to feature Mammootty in a significant role.
