According to the UAE Federal Traffic Law, running a red light attracts a fine of Dh1,000, 12 black points and a 30‑day vehicle impoundment. In Dubai, the rules are harsher: a violator must pay Dh50,000 to release the impounded vehicle, plus the mandatory 30‑day hold, as per Decree No. 30 of 2023.
Abu Dhabi follows a similar framework under Law No. 5 of 2020. There, the Dh50,000 release fee also applies and the vehicle can stay impounded for up to three months or be auctioned if unclaimed.
If a red‑light breach leads to a fatal accident, penalties jump dramatically. They can include imprisonment and fines starting at Dh50,000, potentially rising to Dh100,000 depending on the circumstances.
Police urge drivers to stay alert at intersections, avoid distractions like mobile phones, and never try to beat an amber signal. Pedestrians, too, are asked to use designated crossings and obey signals.
Additional notes from Sharjah Police mention a Dh400 fine for unsafe road crossing, while Dubai has launched a major road safety drive aimed at protecting pedestrians.
