A 19-year-old woman in Parbhani gave birth to a baby in a moving sleeper coach bus, but she and a youth claiming to be her husband threw the newborn out of the window, resulting in the death of the baby. Around 6.30 am on Tuesday, a youth on Pathri-Selu Road saw something wrapped in a cloth being thrown out of the bus. He informed the police.
The police stopped the bus and inquired. It was revealed that a woman named Ritika Dhere was travelling from Pune to Parbhani in a sleeper coach bus of Sant Prayag Travels with Altaf Sheikh (who was claiming to be her husband). During the journey, the pregnant woman experienced labour pains and gave birth to a boy. After this, they wrapped the newborn in a cloth and threw him out of the vehicle.
When the driver of the sleeper bus inquired about this, Shaikh told that his wife had vomited due to nausea caused by the bus journey. Meanwhile, when an alert citizen on the road saw the object thrown out of the bus window, he was stunned to see that it was a baby. He immediately called the police’s 112 helpline and reported it.
A team of local police on patrol stopped the bus. They took the woman and Shaikh into custody, the official said. The couple told that they threw the newborn because they were unable to raise the child. The child died due to being thrown on the road. Both were residents of Parbhani and were living in Pune for the last one and a half years. Police said that they claimed to be husband and wife, but could not produce any documents to support their claim. After taking her into custody, the police took the woman to the hospital for treatment.
