Pune Metro Update: The Union Cabinet led by PM Modi has also approved the second phase of Pune Metro. About Rs 4 thousand crores have also been allocated for this. This project is to be completed in 4 years …

The Union Cabinet headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the second phase of the metro to relieve Pune city from traffic jams. Under this, metro lines will be laid from Vanaz area of the city to Chandni Chowk and from Ramwadi to Wagholi. Under this project, the metro line built in the first phase will also be expanded to Vanaz-Ramwadi. The cabinet has approved Rs 3,626 crore for this project.

This project has been prepared under the mobility plan, which will connect the eastern and western ends of Pune city. The route from Chandni Chowk to Wagholi to be built in the Corridor-2 proposal will provide relief from traffic jams in the busy areas of the city.

Through the Phase-1 extension of the project, lakhs of people from IT hubs, commercial areas, educational institutions and residential areas will get easy public transport. Not only this, this route will also connect the existing metro of the District Court, which is on Lane-1 of Nagdi-Katraj and near Lane-2 on the Hinjewadi-District Court route. This will make multimodal urban travel easier.

How many kilometers will the corridor be?
The extension of these two elevated corridors will be about 12.75 kilometers, in which a total of 13 stations will be built. Through this, it will be easy to deal with traffic jams in Chandni Chowk, Bavdhan, Kodhrud, Kharadi and Wagholi areas. The deadline for completing this project has been set to 4 years. It has been told in the cabinet decision that the metro project will be fully ready by the year 2029.

What is the plan of the project?
Under this project of Pune Metro, the aim is to expand Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited and reduce the burden on buses. Under this metro, feeder bus service will also be started to provide last mile connectivity. Better space will be created for pedestrians near every metro station. Apart from this, infrastructure will also be created for bicycles and parking.

Who will bear the cost?
The central government and the state government of Maharashtra will bear the cost of this project equally. Under the project, intercity buses running from cities like Mumbai, Bangalore will also be given connectivity to these metros. These buses will be connected to Chandni Chowk Metro, while buses coming from Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar and Ahilya Nagar will be connected to Wagholi Metro. Through this expansion, traffic jams in the areas of Paud Road and Nagar Road will be completely eliminated. Along with this, people will get an option of eco-friendly and easy transport.

How many people will travel
After the completion of both the corridors, by the year 2027, about 96 thousand people will travel on Line 2 daily, while by the year 2037 this number will increase to more than 2 lakhs. After 10 years, i.e. in 2047, about 2.87 lakh people will start traveling on this line daily and by 2057 this number will increase to 3.49 lakhs. This means that the pressure of lakhs of people on the city roads will be reduced.
