Authorities emphasised that pedestrian crossings are not just road markings but designated safe zones. Crossing violations are not mere traffic infractions; they endanger lives and require strict enforcement.
The driver in the footage ignored traffic laws and nearly hit a child. Dubai Police warned that such actions can have severe consequences, especially near schools and hospitals where pedestrians are at higher risk.
Under the UAE Federal Traffic Law, a red‑light violation carries a Dh1,000 fine, 12 black points, and a 30‑day vehicle impoundment. Dubai adds harsher penalties: a Dh50,000 release fee for impounded vehicles, along with the required 30‑day impound period under Decree No. 30 of 2023.
Abu Dhabi enforces similar rules under Law No. 5 of 2020. Violators must pay Dh50,000 to retrieve their vehicle, and unclaimed cars may remain on the lot for up to three months or be auctioned.
Penalties increase dramatically if a red‑light violation results in a fatal accident. Drivers could face imprisonment and fines ranging from Dh50,000 to Dh100,000, depending on the case.
Dubai Police urged drivers to stay alert at intersections, avoid distractions like mobile phones, and never be tempted to beat amber signals. Pedestrians were reminded to use designated crossings and obey signals to protect their safety.
Sharjah Police have also issued a Dh400 fine for unsafe road crossing violations, signalling a broader regional push for road safety.
Dubai is rolling out a major road safety campaign focused on pedestrians, aiming to reduce accidents and reinforce responsible driving habits across the city.
