And look — pedestrian crossings aren’t just markings on the road. Officials stressed that these are designated safe zones. They exist to ensure people can cross without fear. Running a red light or refusing to give way isn’t some minor slip-up. It’s behaviour that endangers lives.
The driver in the video ignored traffic laws. Nearly struck a child. Dubai Police warned that consequences like these — real consequences — follow such actions.
There’s more to it, though.
Authorities also used the moment to remind motorists about slowing down near schools and hospitals. Stop completely at pedestrian crossings. Only move once people have safely crossed the road. Not before. Not “close enough.” Only once they’re safe.
Under the UAE Federal Traffic Law, jumping a red light carries a Dh1,000 fine. Add 12 black points to that. And then there’s the 30-day vehicle impoundment on top.
But in Dubai? It gets harsher.
Drivers caught in the emirate face significantly stricter penalties. Dh50,000 to release an impounded vehicle — that’s on top of the mandatory 30-day impound period. This comes under Decree No. 30 of 2023.
Abu Dhabi follows a similar playbook. Law No. 5 of 2020 enforces the Dh50,000 release fee there too. Vehicles may remain impounded for up to three months. Or they could be auctioned off entirely if unclaimed.
The stakes go up further if a red light violation leads to a fatal accident. We’re talking imprisonment. Fines starting from Dh50,000. They can reach Dh100,000 depending on severity and circumstances.
Dubai Police urged drivers to stay alert at intersections. Avoid distractions — mobile phones especially. And never, ever try to beat an amber signal. That split-second gamble? It’s not worth it.
Pedestrians got a reminder too. Use designated crossings. Obey the signals. It’s not just on drivers to keep roads safe.
So yeah — it could have been much worse. The toddler escaped unharmed. But the footage is out there now. And the numbers, the fines, the rules — they all point in one direction. Be careful out there. On all of it.
