Dubai police shared a video that caught a driver running a red light at a pedestrian crossing, almost colliding with a toddler in a stroller. The footage highlighted how a split‑second decision can endanger lives. Police said the driver ignored traffic laws and almost hit the child, stressing that such behaviour constitutes a serious threat.
In its statement, Dubai Police said responsible driving reflects a commitment to safety. Pedestrian crossings are described as designated safe zones, not just road markings. The police warned that running a red light or failing to give way is a traffic violation that endangers lives.
The authorities reminded motorists to slow down near schools and hospitals, stop completely at crossings, and only proceed when everyone has crossed safely. Under the UAE Federal Traffic Law, a red light violation carries a Dh1,000 fine, 12 black points, and a 30‑day vehicle impoundment. In Dubai, the penalties are stricter: violators must pay Dh50,000 to release an impounded vehicle, plus the mandatory 30‑day impound period under Decree No. 30 of 2023.
Abu Dhabi enforces similar rules under Law No. 5 of 2020, where the Dh50,000 release fee applies and vehicles may be impounded for up to three months or auctioned if unclaimed. If a red light violation leads to a fatal accident, penalties raise further, including imprisonment and fines starting from Dh50,000 and potentially reaching Dh100,000, depending on the circumstances.
The police urged drivers to stay alert at intersections, avoid distractions such as mobile phone use, and never try to beat amber signals. Pedestrians were also reminded to use designated crossings and obey signals to ensure safety on the roads.
Sharjah Police reported a Dh400 fine for unsafe road crossing. Dubai has launched a major road safety campaign focused on pedestrians.
