ITR Filing 2025 : The process of filing Income Tax Return (ITR) for the financial year 2024-25 (Assessment Year 2025-26) has officially started. ITR-1 and ITR-4 forms are now available on the Income Tax Department website. Taxpayers can also file returns through Excel utility. However, experts believe that it is not right to rush to file returns now.
TDS and Form 16 not updated
The last date for filing TDS returns was 31 May 2025. In such a situation, it may take 5–7 days for the updates to appear in Form 26AS. At the same time, Form 16 required for salaried employees is usually issued in mid-June.
AIS and TIS are also incomplete
Important documents for taxpayers Annual Information Statement (AIS) and Taxpayer Information Summary (TIS) are also not fully updated at this time. These documents are usually updated by the end of the first week of June.
Waiting for other ITR forms
At present, only ITR-1 and ITR-4 are available online and in Excel mode. Utilities of forms like ITR-2, ITR-3, ITR-5 and ITR-6 have not been made live yet.
When to file ITR?
Experts advise that taxpayers wait till the second week of June so that the details of TDS, bank interest, capital gains, and other income can be fully updated. This will make it easier to cross-verify Form 26AS, AIS and Form 16 and there will be less scope for error in return filing.
Due date extended to 15 September
For taxpayers with non-audit cases, the government has extended the last date for filing ITR this year to 15 September 2025. In such a situation, taxpayers have enough time to file returns based on correct and updated information.
