Kara, featuring Dhanush and directed by Vignesh Raja, was released in theatres on 30 April and migrated to Netflix on 28 May. The crime‑thriller had mixed feedback during its theatrical stint, with audiences labeling the screenplay sluggish and the emotional beats heavy. Yet, the film’s digital debut has flipped the script for many viewers.
Several fans have come forward after watching the Netflix version, admitting they had avoided the movie in theatres. One viewer wrote, “How did we fail to celebrate this film? I skipped watching it after seeing the online reviews, but from start to finish, the movie was absolutely brilliant. One of the best films of the year.” Another posted an apology straight to the makers: “Sorry Mr D and Vignesh Raja, I skipped a super solid film because of fake negative reviews and now I feel guilty. Good films deserve strong word of mouth, and Kara deserved a better audience.”
The interval block and a pre‑interval bank robbery sequence are receiving fresh praise. A fan commented, “What an interval setup man!” while another noted, “The pre‑interval bank robbery stretch is the scene to watch out for.” Emotional beats blended with crime drama elements are also highlighted by new audiences.
Not every viewer is convinced. Some still find the pace too slow. One social media user stated, “Below average watch for me. Really tired of this slow‑paced thriller genre.” Yet even critics acknowledge the film’s engaging payoffs. Another reviewer added, “Though the screenplay feels sluggish at times, a few solid moments make it a decent watch overall. Can definitely give it a try on Netflix.”
During its theatrical run, Kara opened with a reported budget that many expected to push it beyond ₹100 crore worldwide. It finished with approximately ₹50 crore at the box office. Now, the OTT response has rekindled online discussions. Dhanush is currently working on his next project with director Rajkumar Periasamy, which reportedly features Mammootty in a significant role.
