Railway employees went on strike at CSMT station from around 5:50 pm to 6:45 pm on Thursday, halting work there. The protest was against the FIR filed against two engineers in the Mumbra accident.
An accident occurred at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) railway station in Mumbai on Thursday evening amid a railway workers’ strike. Four passengers were walking on the tracks when local train services were halted when a train hit them. Three passengers died, while the fourth remains in critical condition. The accident occurred near Sandhurst Road station.
According to reports, railway workers had halted work at CSMT station and staged a strike from around 5:50 pm to 6:45 pm on Thursday. This protest was against the FIR filed against two engineers in the Mumbra accident. Railway unions, the National Railway Mazdoor Union and the Central Railway Mazdoor Union, called this action unfair and arbitrary. Due to the workers’ protest, Mumbai’s busiest local train services were disrupted for about an hour.
It is reported that thousands of passengers were stranded at CSMT due to the disruption of services. Many gathered in the station premises, while others began walking along the tracks. While the passengers were crossing the railway tracks near Sandhurst Road, a speeding train struck four passengers. Other passengers at the scene immediately informed police and railway officials. However, the reason for the passengers walking on the tracks is still unclear.
It is reported that the investigation report into the Mumbra accident found that the track where the accident occurred in June had been repaired four days prior, but the track had not been properly welded. This negligence contributed to the train accident and the deaths of five people.
