Nihal Modi, brother of Nirav Modi, accused of India’s most talked about bank scam, has been arrested in the US. This arrest was made on the basis of an extradition request sent by CBI and ED.

Nehal Modi Arrested: India has got a big success against another accused related to the much talked about Punjab National Bank (PNB) scam. Nirav Modi’s brother Nehal Modi has been arrested in America. This arrest has been made on the joint extradition appeal of India’s Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

The US Justice Department has confirmed that Nihal Modi’s arrest has been made under the extradition request of the Indian government, and now the process of his extradition will begin in the US. Nihal Modi is accused of money laundering under Section 3 of India’s Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002. That is, he tried to show the money earned through illegal means as legal through different means.

What sections were imposed on Nihal Modi

Under Section 120-B and 201 of the Indian Penal Code, Nihal Modi is accused of criminal conspiracy and destruction of evidence. Investigative agencies believe that Nihal deliberately tried to mislead the investigation by being involved in the scam.

Fraud in America too

Nihal Modi was already an accused in another case in America. He took diamonds worth about $2.6 million (Rs 21 crore) from LLD Diamonds USA saying that he would sell them to Costco. But later he took a loan by mortgaging the diamonds and sold the rest at a huge discount. His name has come up in cases related to the PNB scam in India. It is alleged that he helped his brother Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi and was involved in a scam of Rs 13,000 crore.
