OTT Platforms Banned in India: The Government of India has taken a big step regarding the increasing obscene and indecent content on digital platforms. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has ordered the closure of 25 OTT apps and websites including Ullu, Alt, Desiflix. This action has been taken against those platforms which were broadcasting sexually explicit scenes, obscenity and content devoid of social context.

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting took this action in consultation with the Ministries of Home, Women and Child Development, Electronics, Information Technology and Law, industry bodies FICCI and CII and experts in the field of women and child rights. He informed that notifications have been issued to various platforms as per the provisions of the Information Technology Act, 2000 and IT Rules, 2021 to ensure that access to the relevant websites and apps is blocked.

Officials said the content being made available on these platforms included sexual innuendos, long stretches of sexually explicit scenes with no story, theme or message in the social context. They said the government had received complaints against these platforms from the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) and the general public last year.

The government has already taken action
Earlier, in May, Ullu had removed the web series ‘House Arrest’ after the ministry’s intervention. Officials said that in September last year, all 25 platforms were asked to refrain from publishing obscene, vulgar and in some cases pornographic content, but they continued to publish such content. He said that five platforms were already blocked in March 2024 but they continued to publish pornographic content through new website domains.

These apps were banned
The various apps found violating various laws include Alt, Ullu, Big Shots App, Desiflix, Boomx, Navras Lite, Gulab App, Kangan App, Bull App, Jalwa App, Shohit, Wow Entertainment, Look Entertainment, HitPrime, Feneo, ShowX, Soul Talkies, Adda TV, HotX VIP, Hulchul App, MoodX, NeonX VIP, Fugi, Mojflix, and Triflix, the officials said.
